WEEK 9: Megamatt’s Compilations

I decided to take a break this week to catch up with a couple things. I’ve already started ripping stuff for next week though, so everything will be back to normal!

In the meantime, I didn’t want to leave this week without something to check out. Although these aren’t new to people from the shizz, I figured I’d talk about the two compilations that MegaMatt posted in January.

Matt compiled 2 very large collections, each meant to fit on an mp3 data disc.

VG Compilation Volume 1

228 tracks, 9:41:55.

This .rar contains tracks that span 17 different systems, including both classic and modern video game music. There’s also very little cross-over with content I’ve already ripped for this blog… there’s some Flashback, Warsong, ActRaiser, and Zillion in there, but the rest is stuff I haven’t touched.

A couple of my favorite picks from here are the Golden Axe 2 tracks, and Hiya Hiya Island from Super Adventure Island 2. I recognized the Golden Axe 2 music from an arrangement done by Michael V. Flores, which can be downloaded here. This was my first time hearing the original music, so that was cool. Hiya Hiya Island is a tune that Matt had shared with me previously, and I was way into it and decided to make a chiptune cover of it.

VG Compilation Volume 2

242 tracks, 8:43:19.

This collection includes music from 11 game systems, with a bigger emphasis on 8-bit selections than the first compilation. Some of my favorite picks were the C64 tunes, which is what made me rip Turrican and Golden Axe last week.

Matt says— “This is a very exhaustive and hand-picked collection of music that has stuck with me for my entire video-gaming life. I hope all you guys can enjoy this at least as much as I do.”
