WEEK 6: Ecco: The Tides of Time / Falsion / Rune Worth / Zan Gear

ECCO: THE TIDES OF TIME (Genesis)

(full cover

16 tracks, 41:20. Samples-

Title Theme
Crystal Springs
Trellia’s Bay
Inside

As the sequel to Ecco the Dolphin, Ecco: The Tides of Time was released in 1994 for the Sega Genesis. A large portion of the soundtrack is made up of dark and moody themes, with a greater feel of ambiance over melody.

I was first introduced to this soundtrack by the cover of the Title Theme on the first Sprite Slowdown release.

FALSION (NES)

(full cover

10 tracks, 12:36. Samples-

Level 1
Level 2
Level 6

Released for the Famicom Disk System in 1987, Falsion is a Konami space SHMUP that made use of a peripheral “3d” effect. The 3d system was an option you could select at the menu screen, if you had your special 3d Nintendo goggles on hand.

Thanks to MegaMatt for helping me name the tracks! He played through a rom of the game to come up with the track listing.

Atari Gaming Headquarters write-up on Falsion.

RUNE WORTH (MSX)

(full cover

26 tracks, 41:39. Samples-

Weindenitts Dukedom
Mottanai
The man at 5 o’clock
Relief

Developed by T&E Soft in 1990, Rune Worth is a Japanese RPG for the MSX computer. The titles in the track listing are based off of corresponding tracks from the official arrange album, “All Sounds of Rune Worth”. Translated by Audun (thanks!).

Sampled from the .kss rip, there are a couple tracks missing. On the flip side, there are some tunes here that weren’t used on the official album. The kss rip included the soundtrack put through two different soundchips supported by the MSX— the PSG and the OPLL. I sampled the OPLL version in favor of the smoother, more soothing sound.

ZAN GEAR (Sega Game Gear)

(full cover

7 tracks, 16:30. Samples-

Age of Heat Haze
Turbulent Age

To be honest, I know very little about this title, even after searching around the net. Zan Gear was released in October of 1990 by Nippon Telenet, less than a month after the Game Gear itself. It was a Japanese-only title.

As a random find, I think the music in this game stands out compared to other Game Gear soundtracks I’ve heard. Check it out!
