WEEK 3: Dr. Mario / DuckTales / Rambo III / Space Hulk
DR. MARIO (NES)
12 tracks, 14:59. Samples-
Released in 1990, Dr. Mario is the first peripheral Mario title to exist. It was also released for the Gameboy and remade 4 years later for the Super Nintendo. The music is composed by Hirokazu “Hip” Tanaka, who worked on music and sound effects for a lot of classic Nintendo titles.
DUCKTALES (NES)
14 tracks, 13:42. Samples-
A popular title and memorable soundtrack from the NES, DuckTales includes the highly covered and remixed Moon Theme. The title theme is an arrangement of the cartoon show’s introduction.
Included in this rip is a couple unique tunes from the prototype. Never released to the public, a rare copy wound up in the hands of someone with rom-making capabilities, and his since been distributed amongst the emulation community. The early build of the game has two alternate songs— an entirely different track for the Transylvania level, and a slower version of the Moon Theme with some subtle differences.
RAMBO III (Amiga)
4 tracks, 13:03. Samples-
In celebration of the new Rambo film, I decided to rip this nostalgic selection.
Rambo III spawned multiple games of the same title across several systems, although some games were different altogether. The Amiga and C64 versions are based off of the same make, a top-down non-linear action game with an emphasis on stealth. The Sega Master System title is a light gun game, and the Sega Genesis game a mixed top-down/ 3rd person action game.
Although there is some balancing between the stereo channels, be warned of the Amiga’s hard-panned nature in some soundtracks. Recommended for speakers over headphones.
SPACE HULK (Amiga)
6 tracks, 11:02. Samples-
Released for the IBM-PC and Amiga in 1993, Space Hulk was an early tactical/ first person shooter, based off of the Warhammer 40k universe. Although the game met some complaints due to its difficulty, it received praise for its atmosphere. Dark and moody, the music is largely responsible for helping set the tone.
The music is composed by Jason Whitely.
