An introduction, previous uploads

Hey friends! Welcome to Explod.

I’m creating this blog to share and talk about classic video game music. There’s a lot of music out there impossible to find in any format other than emulated rips from game roms, as the vast majority of games ever released have been left without complete, salable OSTs.

As handy as those exotic formats are (like .nsf, .vgm, etc.), you’ll need standalone players or plugins to support those file-types, and most portable devices won’t support them at all. I’ll be ripping these emulated soundtracks to mp3, so you’ll be able to get them on your ipod or listen to them in your media player with all the work cut out.

About the soundtrack selection:

Every other week I’ll be sharing four soundtracks. There won’t be any rhyme or reason to my selections— whether they’re nostalgic tunes or new discoveries I’ll be picking whatever I like at the moment.

I’ll be focusing on “classic” vgm, mostly 8-bit and 16-bit stuff along the lines of NES, SNES, SMS, MSX, AMIGA, C64, Sega Genesis/Megadrive music, and the like. I’ll try to balance obligatory classics with totally obscure selections.

About the mp3 tagging:

I came up with a system to keep things neat. Hopefully it’ll work nicely for you if you’re as anal about this kind of thing as myself.

Artist - will always be “VG Music”

Album - will start with the system, then game’s name (like “NES - Mega Man”, or “C64 - Turrican”)

mp3 tagging

When you start gathering more and more of these soundtracks, it can become tedious to scroll through your collection if you have to browse through dozens of different composers and companies under the artist tag. Simply put, the lack of a uniform tagging method can make your library quite messy. This groups everything in one place.

I’ll also be using this blog to talk about things of related interest, like chiptunes, concerts, and anything cool involving video game stuff.

Stay tuned! My first contribution will be up later tonight. And I’ll be editing this post to link all of my uploads in one place.
